I am the executive member of the
European Business Ethics Network, EBEN, responsible for communication. I am
delighted to have the opportunity to report to the members of DNWE (EBEN
Germany) directly through your excellent newsletter Forum Wirtschaftsethik. Of
course, all members of EBEN receive the European Business Ethics Newsletter,
but I hope that this regular column will help keep you informed about events
and initiatives at the International level of EBEN. Most of all, I would like
to invite your active participation in the International events of EBEN, and
look forward to meeting some of you in the future.

All of the Executive members are committed to developing EBEN further and would
welcome comments, suggestions and support from all our members. Please do not
hesitate to contact us.
You will have received an annual report from EBEN with the last EBEN
newsletter. Some of the highlights of EBEN activities in the last year are
outlined below. Further details can be found on our website (www.EBEN.org) or in the
newsletters:
- The development of
partnerships with the European Business Network for Social Cohesion, and the
European Ethics Network. We want to serve our members by offering them links
with these groups, and developing projects in which members can participate and
from which they can benefit. We also are developing links beyond Europe, and
have representation on the International Society for Business, Economics and
Ethics committee and the Caux Round Table. I had the opportunity to present
EBEN at the Society for Business Ethics Annual conference (a major North
American network) in August 1999, and we are keen to link EBEN with the Society
for Business Ethics further. See the December newsletter for a full report on
the Society for Business Ethics Conference.
- The EBEN conferences continue
to be stimulating International events. There are two main EBEN conferences
each year, the Annual Conference and the Research Conference. In 1999 these
took place in Amsterdam and Norway respectively. Reports on both are in the
EBEN newsletters. In 2000 the EBEN conference will be in Cambridge, UK at
Churchill College (12-14 September 2000). The research conference will be in
Lyon (France 16-17 June 2000).
- The Chair of EBEN, Heidi von
Weltzien Høivik is responsible for a stream of European Business Ethics
papers at the International Society for Business, Economics and Ethics
conference in São Paulo, Brazil in August 2000. This gives the
opportunity for a pooling of European efforts and worldwide exposure of the
work going on in Europe. Please contact Heidi von Weltzien Høivik for
further information.
- Communications and
publications are seen as critical to the European Business Ethics Network. Some
key points to highlight are:
- The European Business Ethics
Newsletter. Please read the newsletter for further details of activities
throughout EBEN and in the other National Networks. Also, the newsletter is one
of your opportunities to communicate your business ethics events and
publications to EBEN members across the world (after all, EBEN has members from
33 different countries).
- EBEN has an ongoing agreement
with Kluwer to publish a selection of papers from the Annual EBEN conference in
the Journal of Business Ethics.
- EBEN also has a good
relationship with Business Ethics: A European Review. The editor, Jane Collier,
would like more submissions from EBEN members. The journal is published in
English but this should not hinder submissions in other languages.
- The EBEN webpage has been
re-launched at www.EBEN.org
Please visit it and feel free to offer suggestions for additional information,
links, events, that could be included.
There are many locally based
activities relating to business ethics hosted by all the national networks and
groups associated with EBEN. Please refer to the 'News from our Business Ethics
Correspondents' section of the European Business Ethics Newsletter for details
of activities in the countries you are particularly interested in.
The next EBEN conference is being hosted by EBEN-UK at Cambridge, England. I
cordially invite you all to read the Call for Papers in this issue of Forum
Wirtschaftsethik, and consider contributing to the conference and joining us in
Cambridge. Business presentations are very welcome as well as academic papers.
Finally, feel free to contact myself, or any other member of the EBEN
executive, if you have any further questions or comments about EBEN. We welcome
your contribution. |
